Furthermore, it was decided to give a special Award for contributing to the cause of cancer research to Dr. Salwa Boulos, Dept. of Radiology, Mammography, Ospedale Italiano Umberto I, Cairo, Egypt, for her unique breakthrough work in early diagnosis of Breast Cancer in women in Egypt.


The Awards will be in the sum of US$ 125,000 each with exception of the key-note speaker, Prof. Umberto Veronesi, who will receive US$ 150,000.

Recipients of Annual Awards 2002 in the field of malignant tumours of the neurological system


During a festive ceremony on December 5, 2002 the Foundation handed the Awards for the year 2002 to the six Recipients:

(Please also see April 2002 and November 2002 below) As for the 2003 Awards, the Board of Trustees approved a budget for the Foundation in the amount of US$ 1 million, most of which will be devoted to Awards to be given to up to six meritorious individuals and/or groups who have produced and will continue to produce important work in the field of oncologic diseases affecting the digestive system. The amount of each Award will vary between a minimum of US$ 125.000 and a maximum of US$ 175.000 according to the merits of the projects selected.

The 2003 Annual Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday December 4, 2003 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

1. Awards 2002

The Board of Trustees of the Foundation, represented by Mr. Ezer Weizman, sent a letter of thanks and congratulations to the Awardees as previously published. The Awards Ceremony is expected to take place in Israel, early December 2002. During the said ceremony the Awards will be presented to each winner who will also deliver a brief presentation for audience members and in which he will describe his research and plans for using the Award.

2. Awards 2003

The Awards budget for the year 2003 is now being examined and is planned to cover research efforts which are directed to malignant tumours of the gastrointestinal system. Any further decision on this matter will appear on this website.

Approval of the Annual Awards for the year 2002 totalling US$ 1.250.000

The Foundation is proud to announce that following a meeting in Zurich on April 19–21, 2002 of the Members of the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Panel, the selection of the following Awardees was unanimously approved:

  1. Adi Kimchi from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel - for cutting edge, well-written research into brain metastases; the mechanisms for brain metastases and the development of inhibiting factors to stop metastases and invasion.  ( Awarded US$ 250.000)


  2. Yoel Kloog from Tel-Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel - working on many tumors and especially on a novel approach to glioma treatment by specific inhibition of ras signalling.   (Awarded US$ 250.000)



  3. Vincent Collins, originally with the Karolinska Institute, now in Cambridge, United Kingdom. A well-recognized authority who continues to do important work on genetic and expression profiling of gliomas and their clinical relevance. He has had a major impact on modern neuropathology.   (Awarded US$ 250.000)



  4. Dr. Eric Holland, from Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute, New York, U.S.A. He was formerly a clinician neurosurgeon who is now devoted to research. His area of concentration is on the use of retroviral vectors for the development of animal brain tumor models.  (Awarded US$ 200.000)



  5. Dr. Michael Weller, from the Department of Neurology, University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany. For novel approaches to molecular therapy of gliomas by targeting and activating the p53 controlled death-signalling pathway.  (Awarded US$ 150.000)



  6. Dr. Monika Hegi, from the Laboratory of Tumor Biology and Genetics, Lausanne, Switzerland. For profiling of human gliomas for tumor classification by gene expression, and identification of predictive factors.   (Awarded US$ 150.000)

Annual Awards to Researchers for the Year 2002
in honor of Jacqueline Seroussi


1. Annual Awards Ceremony

A festive first ceremony for granting the Foundation’s annual awards in honor of Jacqueline Seroussi, will be held on July 3, 2002, in Tel Aviv / Israel (for details please click “News Bulletin & Events”).

2. Timetable
The timetable leading to such event, taking into account that ample notice should be given to winners and guests, particularly those arriving from abroad, is essentially the following:

2.1   A Committee of 3 Trustees has already been appointed by the Board. This committee shall propose the individuals and/or teams of researchers to a Panel of 6 experts (3 International and 3 Israeli) as from October 1, 2001 and not later than March 1, 2002.

2.2   The candidates proposed shall consist of 12 researchers (individuals and/or teams) whose efforts, for the first annual awards, are directed to the research of malignant tumours of the neurological system.

2.3   The selection of the winners will be made not later than May 1, 2002. The winners shall be selected for their outstanding accomplishments as well as their past, present and ongoing extraordinary contributions to cancer research mentioned in 2.2 above.

3. Total Amount of Awards and Number of Winners
The total amount of the awards that shall be distributed on July 3, 2002, is US$ 1.250.000. Forty percent (40%), i.e. US$ 500.000, shall be exclusively reserved for two (2) Israeli individuals and/or research teams. This sum shall not necessarily be awarded on the basis of an equal split. The percentage for each individual and/or research team may vary and shall be fixed by the Board, with the proviso that a single individual/team shall not receive more than 70% of the sum allocated.
The balance of sixty percent (60%), i.e. US$ 750.000, shall be awarded to a minimum of two (2) and a maximum of three (3) international individuals and/or research teams in which any qualified Israeli individual and/or team can also participate. Likewise, the allocation of the awards shall not necessarily be on the basis of an equal split. The percentage for each individual and/or team may vary and shall be fixed by the Board, with the proviso that a single individual and/or team shall not receive more than 50% of the sum allocated.

4. Future Awards
The Foundation’s annual awards budget for the year 2003 will be fixed by the Board during its meeting next year. Full details will appear on this site.
